Amal Tamara
About
Amal Tamara is a registered Ayurveda hospital located on the serene shores of Vembanad Lake in Alappuzha, Kerala, known as the Venice of the East. Spread across three acres along the tranquil backwaters, this dedicated healing retreat is rooted in the Shibulal family’s Ayurvedic lineage, which dates back to the 1920s. The property combines traditional Ayurvedic wisdom with a peaceful natural setting, offering personalized wellness programmes designed around each guest’s individual needs.
At Amal Tamara, every wellness journey begins well before arrival, with a detailed online consultation designed to understand each guest’s individual needs. Once at the retreat, guests undergo a comprehensive assessment with experienced Ayurvedic physicians, encompassing Prakrithi analysis, an evaluation of dosha imbalances and the ancient Nadi Pareeksha pulse diagnosis. These insights form the basis of a bespoke wellness programme, thoughtfully combining traditional Ayurvedic therapies, herbal formulations, Panchakarma treatments where appropriate, lifestyle recommendations and a carefully curated vegetarian diet.
Life at Amal Tamara unfolds at a gentle, restorative pace. Mornings begin with the sacred Agnihotram fire ritual, followed by a selection of yoga and meditation practices, from Hatha and restorative yoga to pranayama, therapeutic yoga and singing bowl meditation. Guided by a naturopathy doctor, these sessions weave together mindful movement, breathwork and deep relaxation, creating a sense of balance that extends throughout the day.
The experience goes beyond wellness treatments, inviting guests to discover the cultural and traditional richness of the retreat. From time-honored rituals to immersive cultural experiences, each element offers an opportunity to slow down, reconnect and experience a more holistic approach to wellbeing. Walks through the Nakshatra Vanam and Dhanvantari Pradakshinam, Raga Therapy and traditional indoor Kreeda games offer opportunities for reflection and relaxation. Cultural evenings featuring Kathakali, Kalaripayattu, Veena and Mridangam introduce guests to Kerala’s rich artistic heritage, while optional experiences such as backwater cruises, village visits and temple excursions provide a deeper connection with the surrounding region.
The retreat is home to a team of experienced Ayurvedic doctors who design bespoke programmes and conduct daily check-ins to monitor each guest’s progress. Alongside Ayurvedic therapies, the experience incorporates movement, meditation, sound healing and Agnihotra rituals. Guests can also enjoy the Kashayapura Experience, which introduces them to the traditional preparation of herbal decoctions.
All meals at Amal Tamara are freshly prepared vegetarian dishes, thoughtfully planned according to the guest’s dosha and nutritional requirements. Alcohol and coffee are not available at the retreat. Through pre-arrival assessments and continued guidance under the Amal Yatri programme, guests can also receive follow-up support after completing their stay.
Set amidst the peaceful Alleppey backwaters, Amal Tamara offers an immersive Ayurvedic retreat experience where traditional therapies, mindful living practices, cultural experiences and a tranquil natural environment come together. The adults-focused property does not accommodate children under 12, helping maintain a quiet and treatment-oriented atmosphere.
